Arm restraints are designed to keep the drivers arms inside the racing vehicle during a crash or rollover. Most sanctioning bodies require arm straps in racing vehicles that have an open cockpit (i.e. sprint cars, midgets, off-road and road racing applications). Most road racing applications use individual arm restraints since they allow the use of hand hand signals to the corner workers or other racing vehicles. Sprint cars, midgets, and off-road racing vehicle normally use the style with the Y-strap, and this style is more restrictive on arm movement for additional safety.
